Majorelle garden Marrakech

There are places where history, art, and nature come together to create something truly unforgettable. Majorelle Garden is undoubtedly one of them. A true oasis in the heart of Marrakech, this botanical garden is now one of Morocco's most visited landmarks. Behind its world-famous electric blue walls lies a remarkable story of artistic passion, abandonment, and an extraordinary revival thanks to Yves Saint Laurent.

At Aliyah Prestige, a luxury concierge service based in Marrakech, visiting Majorelle Garden is one of the essential experiences we recommend to our guests. Beyond the iconic photographs recognized around the world, the garden tells a story that is deeply intertwined with the soul of Marrakech.

A dream born from the passion of a French painter

The story begins in 1919, when French painter Jacques Majorelle first discovered Marrakech. Captivated by the city's exceptional light, the vibrant colors of its souks, and the richness of Morocco's landscapes, he decided to settle there permanently. In 1923, he acquired a former palm grove on the outskirts of the medina. His ambition was extraordinary: not simply to create a garden, but to design a living work of art.

For nearly forty years, Jacques Majorelle collected plants from all over the world. Gradually, the garden became a botanical masterpiece where species from five continents flourished side by side.

Today, this remarkable diversity continues to amaze visitors:

  • More than 300 plant species

  • Towering century-old cacti

  • Giant bamboo groves

  • Rare palm trees

  • Vibrant bougainvillea

  • Monumental agaves

  • Peaceful ponds filled with water lilies and fish

Every pathway was carefully designed as an artistic composition where perspectives, shadows, and colors continuously evolve throughout the day.

Majorelle blue: the color that became a legend

It is impossible to talk about the garden without mentioning its famous Majorelle Blue.

In 1937, Jacques Majorelle created an intense ultramarine shade unlike anything seen before. His goal was simple: to develop a color capable of enhancing the beauty of the surrounding vegetation under Morocco's unique sunlight. The result exceeded every expectation.

The vibrant blue creates a striking contrast against the deep green palms, golden cacti, vivid flowers, and Marrakech's earthy ochre tones. This distinctive shade quickly became the garden's signature and is now internationally recognized as Majorelle Blue. Few visitors realize that this iconic color is now protected and remains one of the most recognizable artistic signatures of the twentieth century.

The garden saved by Yves Saint Laurent

The story could easily have ended there. Following Jacques Majorelle's death in 1962, the garden slowly fell into neglect. Plants deteriorated, buildings decayed, and a real estate project even planned to replace it with a hotel complex.

Everything changed when Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé entered the story.

Having fallen in love with Marrakech during their first visit in 1966, they discovered the garden almost by chance and were immediately captivated by its beauty. When they learned that it was threatened with demolition, they made a decision that would forever change its future. In 1980, they purchased the property to preserve it. Over the following years, they undertook an ambitious restoration project. New plant species were introduced, the ponds were restored, the buildings regained their original brilliance, and the garden was carefully revived while remaining faithful to Jacques Majorelle's original vision. Without their intervention, Majorelle Garden would most likely no longer exist today.

A never-ending source of inspiration for Yves Saint Laurent

For Yves Saint Laurent, Marrakech was far more than a travel destination. The legendary couturier often said that Morocco completely transformed his perception of color. Traditional caftans, lush gardens, intricate mosaics, and the city's extraordinary light profoundly influenced many of his Haute Couture collections.

Majorelle Garden quickly became his personal sanctuary and one of his greatest creative inspirations. Following his passing in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the rose garden of Villa Oasis, located within the property, making this place a deeply personal tribute to the man who helped save it.

Yves Saint Laurent museum Marrakech: an immersion into the designer's world

Just a few steps from Majorelle Garden stands the Yves Saint Laurent Museum Marrakech, inaugurated in 2017. Its contemporary architecture, inspired by the textures and folds of haute couture fabrics, blends beautifully with the colors and atmosphere of Marrakech.

Inside, visitors discover an elegant exhibition featuring:

  • Iconic Yves Saint Laurent creations

  • Original sketches

  • Haute couture accessories

  • Rare photographs

  • Temporary exhibitions dedicated to fashion, design, and contemporary art

The museum offers a deeper understanding of the unique relationship between Yves Saint Laurent and Marrakech, a city that profoundly shaped his artistic vision.

Much more than a tourist attraction

Today, Majorelle Garden welcomes nearly 800,000 visitors every year, making it one of Morocco's most visited cultural landmarks. Yet many visitors overlook what truly makes this place magical. Take your time to wander through its peaceful pathways and you'll notice sunlight filtering through towering cacti, birds singing throughout the gardens, the soothing sound of fountains, and the perfect harmony between Art Deco architecture, Moorish influences, and lush botanical landscapes.

The best time to visit is early in the morning, when the soft light beautifully enhances the famous Majorelle Blue and the garden remains wonderfully peaceful.
